International Institute for Sustainable Development

Public Environmental Reporting Initiative (PERI) Guidelines

The Green Design Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University
This website allows users to estimate the overall environmental impacts from the production of a certain dollar amount of approximately 500 commodities or services in the United States. The entire production supply chain is included. To make an estimate, a user may browse or search for one of 500 commodity or service sectors in the model. Environmental impacts include energy use, air pollutants, hazardous wastes, toxic emissions and dollar estimates of external air pollution costs.

US EPA "Green Engineering" Eco-design Program
Businesses and manufacturers concerned with making products and using processes that minimize pollution and risk to the environment and human health should run, not walk, to this U.S. EPA site. It offers a wealth of resources for turning the "green engineering" concept into reality. Online case studies, available in the “Outreach?section, show how ecodesign principles have been successfully applied to products and processes. Web users can also scan the "Green Engineering Textbook." Although the book is aimed at instructing college-level engineering students, it is also useful for those working in the field. A Designer's Guide to Eco-conscious Design of Electric and Electronic Equipment
The DesignGuide was developed in Denmark in cooperation between The Institute for Product Development (IPU), Danish Toxicology Centre (DTC) and the consultancy GN-Teknik with funding from Danish Environmental Protection Agency. Danish companies, especially Ericsson Diax A/S and Grundfos A/S, were involved in setting up the requirements and final testing. The tool tries to cover all needs of a company that has decided to make improvements in the environmental aspects of its products, and to have this as an ongoing standard activity in the development process. It can provide the initial competence build-up as well as the necessary tools for a company to implement Eco-Design in product development.

A Designer's Guide to Eco-conscious Design of Electric and Electronic Equipment
The DesignGuide was developed in Denmark in cooperation between The Institute for Product Development (IPU), Danish Toxicology Centre (DTC) and the consultancy GN-Teknik with funding from Danish Environmental Protection Agency. Danish companies, especially Ericsson Diax A/S and Grundfos A/S, were involved in setting up the requirements and final testing. The tool tries to cover all needs of a company that has decided to make improvements in the environmental aspects of its products, and to have this as an ongoing standard activity in the development process. It can provide the initial competence build-up as well as the necessary tools for a company to implement Eco-Design in product development.

NetPEM has recently initiated a broad-based international cooperation programme on Environmental Education focusing on Indian needs and issues in specific, and on developing countries in general. The site includes a breakdown of typical energy consumption in restaurants and lists the small and large steps - from frequently cleaning refrigerator and cleaner-condenser coils to upgrading to a high-efficiency oil or gas boiler - that restaurants can take to reduce energy costs.
